Our 5 year plan…. worked perfectly

A Vaderblustaf blue pup from Black X Blue mating in 2023

We have been breeders since 2009, absolute novices back then !! You can read about our story ‘Where it all started’ in our very first News blog, it’s an unusual but interesting story so if you get a chance take a look!! Since then, in 16 years we have learnt so much, trial and error making mistakes and learning along the way. Even now as experienced, knowledgeable breeders we are still learning…… learning never stops and every year, like any good breeder, we are not standing still and tying to improve on the last year. we have made some majors changes over the past 5 years and in this blog we will tell you why and how we made these changes.

Between 2010 and 2025 with the popularity of blues, the market became saturated with blues. At the beginning, blues in 2008 were decent and from black lines, often with great coats and impressive to look at as they were then rare. The problem came, as novice breeders, myself included at the time loved the blue so bred them. In them days no licence or regulation at all, blue on blue generation after generation and because of the popularity of the trend the more it happened, the more they lost the quality that the traditional colours always maintained. As blues took over, more and more blues were bred with colour trumping the standard, blues got heavier and taller 20/22 kg and 17/18 inches becoming the norm. Still often impressive, fit, healthy, great dogs but certainly far from traditional stamp of an SBT. Now in the minority, the traditional colours were in decline but still held that quality and standard, 15/16 inches & 15/16kg, rose bud ears, old school SBT’s all going unnoticed while blues took over.

By 2021 and 12 years in, We were now DEFRA 5rated licensed breeders, Vet approved, local authority approved. Our knowledge and experience had grown, facilities top draw. We obviously loved blues but also realised where we wanted to be with our lines, specifically our blues. As a breeders we always want to set standards high and be the very best we can,

So we made big changes………….

A black X Blue mating that produced Black pups but importantly the black pups now carry the blue gene 🧬 this is the long game to produce the best possible blues further down the line. Building your own lines takes generational planning.

Over the past 5 years we have made major changes which we knew would take many years to implement into our lines but we have done exactly that and massively improved the quality of our lines. We wanted to drop height and weight and return to the more traditional compact SBT’s lost in the blue world.

In 2020➡ 0% of our pups were from Black/Blue matings,

in 2023➡ 25% Black/Blue

in 2024 ➡ 60% Black/Blue

in 2025 ➡ 100% Black/Blue

Champion Rampage MM Power

It’s no surprise that in that 5 year period the quality at Vaderblustaf is at an all time high, it’s not a secret formula, producing old school short compact blues comes from blacks with the blue gene🧬 100% of the pups we produce here at Vaderblustaf now come from black/blue matings stacked with champions & quality, the best blue pups come from black lines. Our aim was to implement black carring the blue gene🧬 into our own lines, carrying the Vaderblustaf name. Without a doubt further down the line we will do blue/blue matings again but importantly then our blues will have strong black champion lines, short, compact, healthy SBTs who have great coats and quality skin.

Darcy scan 2021 to confirm pregnancy of a blue & black litter. early in our 5 year project.

In 2025 the blue market is at an all time low, generation after generation of blue x Blue breeding, only leads to more dilute blues and if that pattern continues, generation after generation of poor breeding, then comes increased risk of skin conditions. If you are new to breeding or even an experienced breeder with a blue female due to be bred think about if you want to add to the blue x blue issues already out there or if your want to improve your blue lines, if you do then you should use a black carrying the blue gene🧬male and produce blues with the added quality of traditional short, compact black lines…… You don’t have to use our stud, there are other quality black Studs across the UK but just don’t further dilute your blue lines.

Mr ‘T’ Blue🧬 Vaderblustaf Black Genesis

Mr ‘T’ sums up everything we have worked towards for 5 years and building that quality into our lines. This boy is what VaderBluStaf stands for, he is Champion sired, compact is an understatement below 14 inches ( 13.7 approx ) 15.5kg and look at that head and ears !!!!

Baby we did it !!!!……….. We have done the hard work, generational building to get to this point and raise the bar. Mr’T’ carrying the blue gene🧬 will produce quality blues for years to come. We have done the hard work, generational match making, implementing the blue gene 🧬 into champion lines that previously didn’t have it, so if you have a blue female due in season and want to produce blues with traditional short, compact quality then from the end of July……… Mr ’T’ will be available.
